Duke of Edinburgh

Year 9 students completing the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award can apply to undertake a volunteering placement at Kingston Libraries.

Placements are available at Chelsea, Cheltenham and Parkdale libraries, with students contributing one hour per week for 13 weeks (13 hours in total).

Placement hours are generally between 4pm and 5pm on weekdays. Unfortunately, evening and weekend placements are not available.

Further information

Once your application has been submitted, you may be invited to attend a short 15-minute interview at your preferred library branch, usually after school hours.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application. If you are offered a placement, you will need to complete and return the required documentation at least one week before your placement begins. Students cannot commence volunteering until all required forms have been received.

During your placement, volunteers are expected to wear neat, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. School uniform may be worn if preferred.

Industry placement

Students currently enrolled in an ALIA-approved course are eligible to apply for an industry placement as a requirement to complete their qualifications. Placement dates, times and frequency are arranged by agreement with students, however industry placement students will not be rostered for evening or weekend shifts.

Placements are offered at Chelsea, Cheltenham or Parkdale library. In addition, some time may be rostered in our operations team during the placement.

Volunteer

Home library service volunteers select and deliver books and resources to the community. Their home visits are a highlight for homebound library members. It's a great opportunity to share and discover favourite books, authors and films.

Work experience

Applications are now open for work experience for the first half of the year. Applications close on 1 March. To be eligible you must live or study within the City of Kingston.

  • For work experience up to the end of July – applications open on 1 February and close 28 February.
  • For work experience from August to December – applications open on 1 June and close 30 June.

Requests cannot be accepted after these cut off dates. Places are strictly limited and subject to availability.

We are committed to providing opportunities to as many local secondary school students as possible. We can offer a maximum of one week of work experience per student. Library hours of work are Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm unless otherwise specified.

Applicants should note that every effort is made to place students, however there is a high demand particularly at peak times of the year including June, July and November and we may not be able to accommodate all requests.

Payments

Work experience students will be paid $5 per day in accordance with minimum requirements under the Victorian Government work experience arrangements. In order to receive payment, bank account details will need to be provided to the City of Kingston.

Further information

After your application is lodged, you may be contacted to attend a short interview. For this interview you will be asked to bring along a copy of your resume and your Department of Education and Early Childhood Development work experience arrangement form.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application.

If you are successful at your interview, your work experience arrangement Form will be completed. This form must then be signed by your school principal, you and your parent / guardian, and returned to Kingston Libraries no later than one week prior to the commencement of your placement. Students cannot commence work experience unless this completed form has been received.

During your placement you will be required to wear neat and tidy clothing and closed toed shoes.
