Why I chose this book:
It was recommended to me as the kind of book that stays with you long after you’ve read it – they were right.
Quick Summary:
After a terrible accident at an abandoned farm for ‘Troubled Teens’ Hazel finds herself being driven by a rage that is not her own.
Possessed by the angry spirit of a girl who died on the farm 30 years previously she must find out what happened and set the spirit free if she wants to ever have full possession of herself again.
What I thought:
When it comes to horror books, I am rarely disturbed by tales of ghosts or angry spirits.
This book was different, blending supernatural anguish with the very real abuses of the ‘troubled teen’ industry that endured for decades. The institutions treated teenagers, some who had done nothing more than run away from abusive homes, or had a sexuality that their families found inconvenient, as if they were disposable because no one would care what happened to a ‘troubled teen’.
Knowing that this book was based on institutions that were real life houses of horror, it was easy to believe, as the book unravels the events of the past that the pain they caused may have resulted in restless, vengeful spirits thirsting for revenge, and it makes for truly haunting storytelling.
