The next Australian Census will take place on Tuesday 11 August 2026.

Held every five years, the Census counts every person and household in Australia and collects important information about our communities, including age, ancestry, employment, education and the languages spoken at home.

The information gathered helps governments, community organisations and businesses plan the services and infrastructure that communities need, both now and in the future. Every response helps build a clearer picture of Australia.

Need help? We are hosting free information sessions to help community members complete their Census or learn more about the process.

Who needs to take part?

Everyone in Australia on Census night must be included on a Census form. This includes:

  • Australian citizens and permanent residents
  • Visa holders and international students
  • Visitors staying in your home on Census night
  • Babies and children
  • Anyone staying in Australia on Census night

Is my information private?

Yes. Your Census information is protected by law and kept confidential. Personal information is not shared with other government agencies, including the Australian Taxation Office, Services Australia or the Department of Home Affairs.

How do I complete the Census?
