Chelsea Frawley

Chelsea Frawley’s passion for improving conversation around mental health is personal and more powerful because of that.

Her dad, legendary AFL St Kilda footballer Danny Frawley, took his life following years of mental health challenges after retirement.

The footballer had spoken about his struggles and his family, including Chelsea, have continued that work to reduce stigma and increase education and awareness of mental health challenges.

Speaking ahead of her upcoming talk at Cheltenham Library, Chelsea said Men’s Health Week was a wonderful opportunity do that.

“I am looking forward to talking about early intervention and prevention and unpacking the skills needed to cope with life’s highs and lows,” she said.

“Empowering the community to know how to feel more resilient and mentally fit is central to what I cover in my community sessions.

“There is still some stigma attached to men talking about their mental health. Men and women face struggles and depression but sadly three out of four suicides are men.”

Chelsea has stressed her library talk is not just for men.

“Women are very welcome, especially women who have men in their lives. I will talk about my lived experience of supporting someone in my life with mental health challenges,” she told us.

“We’ll talk about recognising signs, next steps and the support available. “

At Moorabbin’s Danny Frawley Centre, Chelsea helps deliver programs that build mental fitness in workplaces, sporting clubs and communities.

Her practical insights and open, honest discussion about the realities of supporting someone living with mental illness is not to be missed.
