What happens when working life changes?
Published on 31 October 2026
Ever wondered what might happen when work takes a back seat?
Writer Steve Carey knows plenty about life’s ever-changing paths–and he’s looking forward to sharing that knowledge with you at our upcoming event Then What Happened?
When it comes to deciding what happens when working life changes, Steve has a basic message: Say yes and don’t over think it!
“It sounds simplistic but the spirit of it is, try things out and if it’s not for you, move on quickly. There are plenty of other things out there to try,” Steve told us.
“Try things, too, that have caught your attention but you’re thinking maybe it’s not for you. Sometimes the thing you sign up for–maybe woodworking at the Men’s Shed–turns out to be right for you not because of the woodworking but because of company and conversation you maybe didn’t even know you were seeking.”
Steve is a former almost-priest turned technology publisher, hypnotherapist, playwright and President of Kingston Writers Centre.
He will be joined by Marcus, a Churchill Fellow, educator and community leader who now gives local people a voice through Radio Carrum and Randy, a journalist, adman, traveller, photographer and musician.
“Often when a career ends, we have to either find ourselves again or reinvent ourselves,” Steve said.
Hosted by David Coulter and presented as part of Movember, this is a chance to hear three unexpected stories in one great community conversation about purpose, passion and what comes next.
Whether you are struggling to find a new path, just thinking about what may happen when that retirement day comes or are simply interested in fascinating local stories, Then What Happened? is for you.
