Join us for a hands-on discovery session exploring the plants, birds, and insects that thrive around Chelsea Library—while contributing to Australia’s longest-running citizen science project, ClimateWatch.
Guided by the knowledgeable Earthwatch team, you’ll learn how to spot key local species, listen for bird calls, observe flowering native plants, and record simple but important data that helps scientists track how climate change is affecting Australia’s environment. No prior experience is needed—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to explore!
We’ll begin indoors with a friendly introduction to the ClimateWatch program and the free ClimateWatch app, created by Earthwatch Australia in partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology and the University of Melbourne. As the first continental phenology project in the Southern Hemisphere, ClimateWatch empowers everyday Australians to collect valuable information about how temperature and rainfall shifts influence the seasonal behaviour of our flora and fauna.
After the introduction, we’ll step outside for a short guided walk around the library surrounds to practice using the app in real time. It’s a fun, engaging way to build new skills, connect with your community, and contribute to meaningful climate research—one observation at a time.
