Celebrating First Nations Stories for Now & Future Generations
Published on 22 August 2025
This is a unique opportunity to experience the power and beauty of First Nations stories, cultures, and languages shared with warmth, wisdom, and deep cultural significance.
Elders Storytime is part of the annual Indigenous Literacy Day celebration, which this year embraces the theme Strength In Our Stories: For Now & Future Generations. This theme highlights the vital role storytelling plays in preserving and strengthening cultures for both present and future communities.
About the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF)
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a national charity supported by the Australian Book Industry, dedicated to improving literacy outcomes in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. ILF works directly with communities to provide culturally relevant books and resources, including early learning board books and book kits. They also support communities to create and publish their own stories in languages of their choice—ensuring that language and culture continue to thrive.
Through community-led initiatives, ILF empowers communities to preserve their stories and languages, fostering pride and literacy for generations to come.
We've partnered with Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place to host two special Storytimes where Elders will read beautiful Indigenous storybooks.
